The ROC Embassy in Burkina Faso sent an urgent message to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 4, informing it that Burkina Faso had encountered a human case of avian flu infection. The Embassy requested that our government provide immediate assistance and goods, such as protective clothes, masks, and gloves, to workers at infected chicken farms. A coordination meeting was held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Taiwan IHA, the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Executive Yuan, and the Council of Agricultural Affairs. In it, a resolution was reached to provide the first batch of relief materials, such as 200 sets of isolation gowns, bouffant hats, protective clothes, gloves, and N95 masks, as well as 45 kg of calcium hypochlorite. In addition, the DOH and COA will each send an expert on April 7 to Burkina Faso to assist in related response measures and educational activities.Taiwan IHA provides Burkina Faso with material relief to prevent avian flu and dispatches personnel to assist with related response measures and educational activities.
Although not a member of the WHO, Taiwan recognizes its responsibility as a member of the international community. It will continue to provide medical assistance to prevent and treat such influenza outbreaks, launch health cooperation initiatives, and provide emergency humanitarian medical assistance to other countries. Taiwan IHA is willing to provide assistance to any nation that experiences avian flu. (E)
