Fernando Nobre, Founder and Chairman of the International Medical Assistance Foundation (AMI) in Portugal, visited Taiwan International Health Action (TaiwanIHA) on July 11, 2007. Mr. Nobre expressed his admiration and appreciation for Taiwan’s efforts to provide international healthcare assistance, especially for helping Kenya to relieve the flood damage and River Valley fever, and Sao Tome and Principe to control cholera and malaria.
The leaders of TaiwanIHA and AMI discussed their experiences in international emergency healthcare cooperation and related issues. They also shared opinions on participating in international humanitarian healthcare cooperation and in healthcare cooperation for developing nations, in particular Portuguese-speaking countries. The two groups reached consensus on joint participation in the prevention and control of major international diseases, such as avian flu, malaria, Rift Valley fever, brain fever and AIDS.
Established in 1984, AMI serves as the largest international healthcare NGO in Portugal. Over the past twenty years, it has participated in humanitarian healthcare assistance to over sixty countries. Mr. Nobre was awarded the Grande-Oficial of Ordem de Mérito by Portugal’s President and the Gold Medal of Human Rights by the National Parliament.
