When we at the American Institute in Taiwan found out about the winners of the State Department's highly-competitive, world-wide "Doors to Diplomacy" website contest, we were very proud to learn that they were from right here in Taiwan. On behalf of Director Young and all my AIT colleagues, I'd like to express our congratulations to Chang Chia-wei, Hung Chin-ting, Chao Shu-han, and Chen Yen-yu, and to the teachers and administrators of Ming-Dao High School in Taichung. I have spent a little time studying their award-winning website, which is called: "The Role of Taiwan in World Health -- International Medical Aid," and it's no wonder they won.

Their website combines an awareness of international affairs that shows a maturity beyond their years, clear dedication in the effort and the research they put into this website, and very strong English skills. As someone who went through school before the Internet era, I also have to say I was very impressed by their computer and graphic skills. But I think the most impressive thing of all in "The Role of Taiwan in World Health -- International Medical Aid," is that it captures a universal human theme: that of doing a good deed in return for a good deed. Chang Chia-wei, Hung Chin-ting, Chao Shu-han, and Chen Yen-yu, first recognize that Taiwan was the recipient of medical assistance from abroad, which helped in Taiwan's spectacular economic and societal development, and then they tell the story of how Taiwan, having achieved that success, went on to return the favor by bringing its medical expertise and resources to those parts of the world in greater need. It's inspiring!

I'm delighted to meet these four talented young ladies here today, as well as their teachers from Ming-Dao High School. I'm sure they'll be successful at whatever they attempt in the future as well. I've brought a small token from AIT today which I'd like to present to them. Once again, I offer you congratulations from AIT and from the U.S. Department of State.
